The Thorn-bush

“Have you not seen Death go by, with my little child?” she asked.

“Yes,” replied the thorn-bush; “but I will not tell you which way he has taken until you have warmed me in your bosom. I am freezing to death here, and turning to ice.”

Then she pressed the thorn-bush to her heart quite close, so that it might be thawed, and the thorns pierced her flesh, and great drops of blood flowed; but the thorn-bush shot forth fresh green leaves, and they became flowers on the cold winter’s night, so warm is the heart of a sorrowing mother. Then the thorn-bush told her the path she must take.

-The Story of a Mother, Hans Christian Anderson

This excerpt from The Story of a Mother spoke to me so deeply and was the inspiration for a grief photo shoot. I wanted to capture what grief looks and feels like as well as memorialize this period in my grief journey. Here are a few of the beautiful photos that were taken in Owens empty nursery.

I'm Nicole, and I am Owen's mama.  I started this blog as a way to tell his story, share inspiration about his short life, and to keep a running diary of my grief journey with anyone who finds themselves here. As you read along, please know that these are not grand literary works.  They are the sacred stories of a grieving mother. They say just start where you are and that there is no right or wrong.  So I started.
